Greening Projects:

Manyanani Peace Park

This park, situated in Section A, Khayelitsha was the result of a special partnership project called "Peace Trees South Africa 1995". Youth from all over the world joined the youth of Khayelitsha for three weeks in April 1995. They transformed a dry desert into the first decent community managed park in Khayelitsha. The ground cover, shrubs and trees are indigenous Cape Flora. This was made possible by donations received from over 3 000 donors worldwide. The park is a national model and has earned a number of awards - The Green Trust-WWF environmenetal award 1995, the Presidents Social Forestry Award 1996 and the Woman of the Year award 2001 for its Chairperson Christina Kaba.

Intshayelelo Primary School

This 100% indigenous school garden was established together with The Botanical Society in 1998. It was the first school garden to plant a wide spectrum of Fynbos species from different floral types within the Cape Floral Kingdom. Over the last few years the garden has served as an experimental model to see which species grow well in the schools on the Cape Flats. The garden is a powerful educational resource for teachers.

Green Streets
- Chumisa Group, Ilitha Park, Khayelitsha

This pioneer group of householders are transforming their desert-like homes with indigenous, water-wise flora. The leaders, Christina Soqiba and Miriam Peterson, encourage members to improve family nutrition and save money by planting healthy organic vegetable gardens as well. They have plans to transform their whole neighbourhood and establish their own nursery!

Green Streets
- Victoria Mxenge Self-Help Housing development

This women-led self-help housing development (a national model under the Homeless People's Federation) is also leading the way in Cape Town and beyond through their environmental transformation work. Abalimi, with the support of The Green Trust-WWF and many Friends, assisted the Victoria Mxenge householders to launch this transformation in 1998.
