Abalimi runs several training courses that use participatory methodologies and have a very practical 'hands on' approach. As most trainees cannot afford to pay the full cost, bursaries are provided according to need. Following the course, trainees receive a certificate, which increasingly paves the way to job opportunities, for example as caretakers at schools.
Some of our courses we offer are:
- Organic vegetable gardening courses (these promote
the deep trench system, a below-ground composing technique,
enabling the soil to hold water and the gardener to
plant crops immediately above).
- Horticulture
- Courses for caretakers
- ILUD (integrated land use design) workshops
As part of the Integrated Land Use Design (ILUD) workshop process, teachers, parents and learners create a design for their school grounds. This design is done on a 3D-scale model of the school.
Our 3 day veg training course provides participants (many of whom are semiliterate or illiterate) with the basic knowledge and skills to begin their own vegetable gardens. The courses are followed up with additional on-site training and support.
During this 1 day caretakers' training module, which involved caretakers from 15 schools, participants are busy learning about mulching. The workshops also provide a good opportunity for caretakers to gather together to share problems, ideas and information.
